- People who don’t use their turn signals- whether they are turning or switching lanes.
Why it exists: People might forget that they are turning really soon, or they do not think anyone is behind them. They might forget to turn it on all together until after they are done turning. Perhaps they do not feel that is important to let the person behind them know that they are turning and would rather them slam on their brakes or swerve out of the way instead.
- Drivers on I-75 who go under the speed limit.
Why it exists: The driver could have bad eyesight and not be able to read how fast they should be driving- in this case they probably should not be driving at all. Or they could be trying to get better gas mileage going the same speed they were going on the small back road they just came from. They might just be going the speed of the slow person in front of them and do not feel the need to pass them.
- People driving slow in the fast lane.
Why it exists: This driver might not realize that the farthest left lane is meant for passing. Instead they might see the open lane and think how nice it is to cruise down the interstate. Or maybe they just like feeling like they are going really fast, when they are actually just going a little above the speed limit.
- The morning school traffic on Boyette Road when I am on my way to work.
Why it exists: There are at least three or four schools on that road, all starting close to the same time. The traffic lights also are not in sync, therefore traffic builds up in the middle of the intersections when one light turns green but the next light is still red.
- The fact that it has taken the local Kia dealership more than a month to fix my broken side mirror on my car.
Why it exists: Supposedly the parts man heard the service lady wrong and ordered only the glass part of the side mirror instead of the whole mirror. If he would have come out and looked at my damaged car in the first place instead of staying at his desk, he would have seen which part was needed to be ordered.
- Not enough cashier lines open at the Summerfield Publix on a Saturday afternoon when everyone is doing their weekly grocery shopping.
Why it exists: Clearly there are not enough cashiers on shift on a Saturday afternoon. Maybe some did not show up for their shift in the first place, leaving the rest of the employees scrambling to fill their shoes. Not knowing the other cashiers were not going to show up, it is too late to call someone who is available. Or maybe not all Saturdays are super busy so they do not have very many cashiers any Saturday.
- How slow the Summerfield Publix’s deli is at lunch time when everyone wants to grab a “quick” lunch.
Why it exists: Just like with the cashier situation at this Publix, the deli section might experience the same problem of not having enough workers during their busy times of the day/week. Some days might be busier than others so they prefer to have them work at different times. Or maybe the deli workers take their time on purpose to make customers give up and grab the pre made sandwiches instead.
- When the brand of water that is on sale at Publix is all gone before I can get a case.
Why it exists: Fellow customers must see that there is a sale going on and they purchase the certain brand of water in bulk. The stockers who work at Publix might not know how great the demand will be for the water and will not restock the water shelf very often. Or maybe the whole store runs out within days of the brand of water going on sale.
- There is nowhere to put my coffee in my shopping cart when I go grocery shopping at Publix after getting a caffeine pick me up at Starbucks.
Why it exists: The carts at Publix do not have cup holders, making it hard for me to keep my coffee up straight while I maneuver through the store. Clearly Publix does not think there is a need to have a cart that includes a cup holder. Maybe this is a tactic to make customers not want to bring in their outside beverages- instead forcing them to buy one inside the store or to prevent a possible mess.
- Drinking coffee in the morning, but still feeling exhausted afterwards.
Why it exists: My body might be immune to caffeine after drinking it multiple times a day for many years, it may no longer have its appropriate affect. I may not be drinking coffee that has enough caffeine for it to keep me awake. Perhaps I am not getting enough sleep and this is my body telling me that no matter how much coffee I drink, only actual sleep will help me stay awake.
- How long it takes the Starbucks baristas to make my drink when there are multiple employees standing around talking to each other.
Why it exists: Maybe each employee has a designated role at the store and does not feel the need to help out other workers when there is nothing for them to do. The baristas themselves may not like help from these employees because they could end up doing more harm than good. Or the chatting employees may be talking about ways to possibly help the store work more efficiently…probably not though.
- The large amount of carbs in bagels when I am working on limiting how many carbs I eat daily.
Why it exists: Pretty sure all bagels are is bread, so bread contains wheat which also contains carbohydrates. Supposedly too many carbs are not good for you, so in turn I try to limit myself on how many I eat a day. Bagels are quite delicious though so this is one that especially bugs me.
- The toilet seat left up when I get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Why it exists: My husband was not told as a child to put the toilet seat down after he was done using the restroom- ever, so in turn he does not do it now. Maybe he too had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night and was “too tired” to remember to put it down afterwards.
- Only hand dryers in bathrooms but then you have to touch the gross handles when leaving- defeating the purpose of washing your hands all together.
Why it exists: Many establishments have recently got onboard with the “eco-friendly” train and try to save the environment by not producing as much waste- therefore eliminating the use of paper towels. These establishments must believe that everyone washes their hands after using the restroom so the door handles are all clean already. Which is unfortunately untrue so I get instead get to touch the dirty handles in public restrooms on my way out.
- My puppy peeing on my carpet in the living room.
Why it exists: She probably isn’t quite sure how to express to her people that she has to go potty. She may not realize yet that she is not supposed to go potty inside the house either. Either way, the pee stain is still on my carpet.
- My puppy chewing on my furniture, shoes, and really anything but her toys.
Why it exists: My puppy is teething and needs to chew on something to help make her teeth stronger. When she feels the urge to chew she finds something to chew on, not understanding that a sandal is not a toy. Her toys may not be as hard or soothing to her gums as my furniture seems to be.
- Mosquitos biting me when I have to take my puppy out to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Why it exists: I live in Florida, where it is humid 90% of the time. Mosquitos tend to come around after it just rains or just when it’s humid. They also seem to be drawn to the light on my cell phone which is necessary when taking my puppy out.
- How quickly my house gets dirty in a matter of a week- especially the bathroom.
Why it exists: Because of the puppy and husband mentioned above, there are many factors that make my house need a good cleaning. From the floor being covered in dirt from my husband’s work boots or with dog hair from my puppy. The bathroom just gets harsh daily use by its occupants.
- How fast my laptop dies when I have only been using it for a short amount of time.
Why it exists: The laptop is a hand me down from a friend who upgraded. Consequently, the battery is seven years old and tends to drain quicker than the average laptop. This gets repetitive after a whole day of working on school work.
- People who do not clean the machines after using them to work out at The Worx Fitness Center.
Why it exists: The gym does not provide wipes to easily wipe down the machines, instead there is only a spray bottle of cleaner and paper towels in one corner of the entire gym. People do not see any other person wiping down the machines and in turn do not see any reason for them to.
Reflection:
On completing this list, I did not face too many challenges. I looked at each area of my life- school, work, and home life and thought about what things really made bothered. Clearly I need to pick a better Publix and gym. Luckily there is a Publix on just about every block near where I live. But the puppy and husband thing just require a little more patience!
Below is said puppy on the day we got her- a whole month ago!
Laura,
ReplyDeleteA lot of these were relatable to my life, such as “how long it takes the Starbucks baristas to make my drink when there are multiple employees standing around talking to each other,” and “how fast my laptop dies when I have only been using it for a short amount of time.” Your explanations for the 20 bugs were specific, to the point, and accurate. I also did not come across challenges while coming up with my list because I thought about all the activities I do in a day, and thought of a time that something bothered me. I thought your post was very interesting, and gave me more big list components! Also, your puppy is so cute!
Laura,
ReplyDeleteI chose your blog when I saw you lived in Riverview, but I am surprised to see that you and I live so close as I also go to the Summerfield Publix, and I can understand and relate to most of your assessments. I also believe that people go painfully slow, and sometimes one car can hold up a whole line of cars just because they refuse to drive faster or move over! Great list!
Jully.
Hey Laura! I can totally relate to your bug list. So many of them (especially the ones that deal with service issues) are ones that I face too. I took my car to get fixed because it broke down and they said nothing was wrong with it and after I’ve had them “fix” it twice, it still does the same thing, and the employees don’t believe me when I tell them something’s wrong. The Starbucks one is another relatable topic. I had a roommate who worked there and I still couldn’t understand why the Starbucks on campus is always “overstaffed” and yet it takes forever to get a simple drink. Number 14 was so true it made me laugh. Great post!
ReplyDeleteLaura,
ReplyDeleteYour list was extremely relatable in the fact that many services do not exceed expectations, and rather barely meet them. Whether its out of not noticing the problem or simply not caring (like driving slow in the left lane) can cause many bugs you listed to mash together and in turn can cause a pretty big difference in your life. Great list Laura!
Hi Laura! I laughed at how many of your bugs all stemmed from one Publix, but I'm also amazed because I've never had a bad experience at one. I hope you find a better one soon!
ReplyDeleteAlso, I LOVE your puppy. I hope you're getting enough sleep- when I first got my dog, she would wake up every few hours to go out, and wouldn't fall back asleep unless I was sleeping on the floor next to her.
